Jacob pulled up to the parking lot and walked around to open the door for River. Man, she looked gorgeous. He’d grown attached to River in their teenage years, but now she simply took his breath away. It was a shame she’d never cared enough about him to stay.

She scouted the street for a second and slid out of the truck with grace. “Bistro?”

“Why not?” He shrugged. “The food here is legendary. Breakfast time is over, and there’s plenty of time until lunch. So there won’t be many people. I know you prefer privacy. Besides, you seemed to like the place before.”

River nodded as they walked to Bistro. “What cuisine do they have on Saturdays? Russian, right? Soledad loves to come here on Saturdays. No wonder, as she’s half-Russian.”

“French will be tomorrow, and German on Monday.” He refrained from a comment that Soledad Sokolova had never met her Russian father. Considering their difficult childhoods, it was amazing the Danger Girls had turned out as well as they had.

He’d had an upbringing full of luxuries but with no attention from his parents, except to remind him how stupid and ungrateful he was. But thanks to River’s tutoring, he’d turned out well, too. Her endless patience and wisdom had allowed him to get a high school diploma and, as a result, a university degree. His high-achieving parents weren’t ashamed of him anymore.

As Jacob opened the door of Bistro for River, he wished he could give her something back for turning his life around. And buying brunch simply was not enough.

She smiled as she glanced at him with those doe-like eyes of hers as she stepped inside. His heart made a strange movement in his chest. He had no right to ask River to stay in Rios Azules. But it was going to be hard to live without her quiet support, sincere smile, and understanding eyes.

Inside Bistro, they were met by the aroma of raspberry tea. A young hostess guided them to the Russian Room, where walls depicted girls in long red sarafans and with kokoshniks on their heads. Rows of matryoshkas, hand-painted wooden nest dolls, decorated shelves in the corners. Huge paintings in rich gilded frames boasted the landscapes of rye fields with emerald forests and white birches against the background of azure sky and snow. A sparkling, round-bellied samovar with a porcelain teapot on top and an array of porcelain cups around it added a finishing touch to the interior.

Jacob pointed in the direction of the door at the farthest corner, and they headed that way. The private room was for VIPs. As much as he hated to pull the rank, he suspected River wanted to be away from spectators. While he liked being the center of attention, he knew she’d always hated crowds. And she probably wouldn’t want anyone to overhear them.

As they entered the VIP room, the hostess handed them the menu. “What would you like to drink?”

“Coffee. Black.” He pulled out a chair for River. He liked making her comfortable and paying her special attention.
